Ryan Drake is a Brit working for the US government in a top secret capacity. He finds missing people for the CIA. He is given a near impossible task, to break a woman out of a super high security prison in the Russian gulag and bring her in safely. From this beginning, a story of intrigue, suspense and action results. The woman in question, Anya, is a mysterious and deadly operative for the CIA, imprisoned as a result of an assignment gone bad. She is unquestionably the most interesting character in the book. Possessed of every deadly skill imaginable, she also has an extremely strong mind and will that helps her survive not only her ordeal in prison but many other dangers that face her as the story unfolds. The characters move from Washington DC and Russia to several countries in the middle east as we learn bit by bit the reasons behind Drake's original assignment. The characters that inhabit this story are complex and definitely not necessarily just good or just bad. The reader is guessing throughout about their motives and loyalties. This is a fun read with lots going on to keep your interest. It is a good and satisfying action/thriller.Tags : Redemption: (Ryan Drake 1) - Kindle edition by Will Jordan. Redemption Ryan Drake 1 edition by Will Jordan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Absolutely loved it! You feel the perspective of the characters as though you are involved in the action. The characters are complex, yet feel real. I was captivated by the writers imagination. I just purchased the next book in the series and after reading half of it, I am still engaged.
These are very well written books, I've read all three. Lots of action but character development as well. The plots are complex enough to be enjoyable without being completely unbelievable. If the reader is going to get picky about the probability of some of the events being possible then they won't be reading this type of thriller in the first place so all is well. Fun to read, keeps your attention and makes you eager for the next instalment.
Great story and lots of action and secrecy. Excellent read, hard to put down. Looking forward to more books from this author. Ryan Drake is a cool 'character'. Some resemblance to Lee Child's Jack Reacher.... but that is the type of book that holds my attention. Good job Will Jordan. Only thing that was a bit confusing was three characters with names starting with the same letter made it a bit confusing as to which two were the bad guys and which one was a good guy ...... names were too similar .... other than that, perfect story.
Thought I'd picked out a book with expected intrigue and "hero overcomes all odds to save the world". So much more. First time in years that I felt as if the writer was describing events and people so vividly that I was watching a movie. Characters, plot, detail, and scenes were picture perfect.
Drake is great as former spy turned go-to-agent. The mission of trying to extract someone from a prison in Russia seems to next to impossible, but that is not where the real suspense of book begins. The book really heats up after the mission. Drake is thrown in many directions and time is not on his side. Drake must use is wit, more than brawn in order to accomplish the "real" mission. As things unfold, you are not sure that will actually happen. And as it turns out, he will not be able to complete the mission. And you are left with is there redemption?
I'm not usually a fan of spy thrillers, not even James Bond. However, I enjoyed this one quite a lot. The author did a really nice job setting each scene and shifting between multiple points of view. He kept things moving in a way that made a 550-page book feel not very long at all. I was very impressed with his knowledge of weaponry and maneuvers. I also felt that, for the most part, the characters were very well done. Ryan Drake is a relatable protagonist despite his unusual line of work. But the best character, by far, is "Maras," also known as (spoiler) Anya. That is both the novel's strength and a weakness.
Maras is incredibly well developed, charismatic, and interesting, as shown from her actions in present time and in flashbacks to her mysterious past. Though the series is called Ryan Drake, this novel seems to revolve around Maras, and is at its best when she occupies the center stage. For certain spans of the novel, Drake seems a bit passive, following along with Maras's schemes for reasons known only to her. The final reveals are a bit predictable, but the entire novel flows well, ties together well, and promises more exciting things to come. Now on to the next novel...
This is one of the best adventures I've read in a while and I've read a lot. Ryan Drake is given a nearly impossible mission and manages to pull it off only to find the trouble is just starting. The flow of this book is incredible because there are no real sudden starts or stops - it truly does flow. The characters that interact with Drake are drawn out enough to know and understand them and to then like or dislike. The writing style is top-notch with scene description letting you grasp the environment quickly and smoothly without slowing down the excitement at all. Best of all, the plot is intriguing and the ending a bit of a surprise but still satisfying.
