Ms. Parsons uses her own family history as the bones for an interesting look at life under King Louis XIV of France for the Protestant Huguenots. The story centers on Madeleine and Francois Clavell and their three children, who have to flee for their lives for the crime of not being Catholics. It is a story of great courage in the face of persecution and faith in God no matter what happens. This could have been preachy, but instead is a fascinating look at a specific point in history through the eyes of those who lived it. It was good. I had read the second book first, so I had a little trouble teasing out what I KNEW was going to happen, with the info from the first book. It was a little syrupy, but overall a good read
It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but as soon as Madeleine went to Versailles, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. If you like any historical fiction, I highly reccommend this. I really cared about the characters and couldn't wait to find out what happened. I'm really looking forward to the next novel in the series.
Nice historical novel--a bit boring at times.
Interesting and fun read on this time in history. The end felt rushed, I felt like there should have been a little more closure.
The Clavells were Heugenots, Protestants in King Louis' time, persecuted because of their faith and their failure to profess Catholicism as the one, true religion. Well worth the read... very highly recommended.
Because the setting of this book was during the time of the French monarchy, I did not expect it to tell such a wonderful story. I also learned a great deal about this time period when Christians were persecuted. The family portrayed in the novel were absolutely wonderful. There was enough suspense to keep you wondering what would happen next.
I find that if I am immediately drawn to the characters and actually care about them that I have trouble putting a book down. This author has made everyone come alive and then placed them in a frightening time period that we can only imagine. She also managed to show us the beauty of it all and I enjoyed it to the last page. A fun and enjoyable read that is inspirational as well. I will watch for the next book! I wrapped this one up to give to my daughter in law for Christmas as I know she will love it too (and won't care if I enjoyed it first!)
